India statement import guide

Indian banks, UPI apps and brokers all hand you a statement file: an XLSX or CSV from net banking, a password-protected PDF from the card issuer, a PhonePe or Google Pay history, a Zerodha holdings sheet, a CDSL CAS. OwnFi reads those files on the phone, so spending, bills and net worth come from documents you already have, with no SMS permission, no bank login and no upload.

This page lists what each institution exports, how OwnFi recognises it, and the two capture routes that need no file at all.

Bank statements

Net-banking statements are matched by their column headers, so download the bank's own file and import it unedited. XLSX and CSV are both read; so is the PDF statement.

BankExport to downloadHow OwnFi recognises it
SBIAccount statement as XLSX or CSV from net banking / YONO, or the PDFTxn Date, Value Date, Description, Ref No./Cheque No., Debit, Credit, Balance
HDFC BankStatement download as XLSX or CSV, or the PDFDate, Narration, Chq./Ref.No., Value Dt, Withdrawal Amt., Deposit Amt., Closing Balance
ICICI BankDetailed statement as XLSX or CSV, or the PDFValue Date, Transaction Date, Cheque Number, Transaction Remarks, Withdrawal Amount, Deposit Amount, Balance
Axis BankStatement as XLSX or CSV, or the PDFTran Date, Chq No, Particulars, Debit, Credit, Balance

Dates are read day-month-year for Indian banks. UPI, IMPS and NEFT narrations are parsed for the counterparty, and a trailing CR marks a credit.

UPI, without reading your SMS

Most Indian expense trackers work by reading SMS, which iPhone does not allow and Android users increasingly refuse. OwnFi has three routes that need no SMS permission:

  • PhonePe and Google Pay statements — export the transaction history from the app (PhonePe's file has Date, Transaction Details, Transaction ID, Amount and Status; Google Pay's has a transaction ID and completed date) and import it like a bank statement.
  • Screenshots — share a UPI payment confirmation to OwnFi and on-device OCR reads the amount, payee and date.
  • Bank notifications on Android — with the notification listener switched on, the transaction alert your bank already pushes is parsed on the phone the moment it arrives. Nothing is forwarded anywhere.

See UPI expense tracker without SMS access and, for iPhone owners, expense tracker for iPhone in India.

Step by step

  1. Download the file

From net banking or the bank app, open the account, choose the period and download. XLSX, CSV and PDF all work; save the file or share it straight to OwnFi.

  2. Import it

Choose Import in OwnFi, or share the file to it. Card and bank PDFs are usually password-protected; OwnFi asks for the password, uses it once on the phone and never stores it.

  3. Review, then budget

Rows the parser is sure of save straight away; uncertain ones are flagged for a look. Bills and subscriptions are detected, and the Dashboard shows what you can safely spend today.

Demat, mutual funds and net worth

Holdings come from the files your broker or depository already sends, never from a broker login:

  • Zerodha — the Holdings XLSX from Console, plus the Tradebook for activity.
  • Angel One — Holdings and Tradebook XLSX exports.
  • CDSL CAS — the consolidated account statement PDF imports as holdings.

CAMS, KFintech and NSDL consolidated statements are recognised but not yet parsed: OwnFi tells you which one it is rather than guessing at a layout it has not verified against a real statement. Positions are priced from public ticker quotes, and anything it cannot price is named on the card instead of being counted as zero.

Financial year and exports

The tax-year export follows the Indian financial year, 1 April to 31 March, and labels the file FY 2025-26 style. Credits stay signed and each row carries its currency, so it opens cleanly in Excel or Google Sheets for a CA. A YNAB-format CSV is also available.

Questions

Does OwnFi need SMS permission?

No. It never asks for it. UPI spending comes from PhonePe and Google Pay statement exports, from payment screenshots read on the phone, or on Android from the bank's own notifications parsed locally.

Do password-protected PDF statements work?

Yes. Enter the password the bank or card issuer set; it opens the file once on the phone and is never stored.

Which banks are recognised automatically?

SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank statements are recognised by their column layout in XLSX, CSV or PDF form. Any other bank's file is learned the first time you confirm which column is which.

Can I track Zerodha or mutual fund holdings?

Zerodha and Angel One holdings sheets and the CDSL CAS import as holdings. CAMS, KFintech and NSDL statements are detected but not yet read; OwnFi says so rather than guessing.

Is anything uploaded?

No. Statements, screenshots and notifications are processed on the phone and stored there, encrypted at rest. There is no OwnFi server.
