Mint alternative for Canada
OwnFi is a free budgeting app that replaces Mint for Canadians without a bank login: you import the PDF or CSV statement your bank already sends you, and the app builds budgets, bills, net worth and a safe-to-spend number from it on the phone.
Mint closed in March 2024 and Canadian accounts had no migration path. The apps that stepped in rely on bank aggregators, and their Canadian reviews are mostly about connections that drop. Importing the statement is the path that cannot break.

How it works
- Download the statement you already get
Your bank's app or website has a PDF or CSV for every month. Save it to your phone, or share it straight to OwnFi from the bank's app.
- Import it on the phone
OwnFi reads it locally: 27 named bank formats plus a parser that learns any CSV once you confirm the columns. Password-protected PDFs open with the password your bank sent, which is never stored.
- Get the number
Transactions are categorised, bills and subscriptions detected, and the Dashboard shows what you can safely spend today with upcoming bills already reserved.
Questions
Does OwnFi connect to Canadian banks?
No app connection. OwnFi reads the statement files RBC, TD, Scotiabank, CIBC and BMO already give you, plus a generic parser for credit unions and any CSV layout you confirm once.
Can I bring in my Mint history?
Yes. Export transactions from Mint's archive as CSV and import the file; OwnFi's universal parser learns the column layout the first time.
What about TFSA and RRSP holdings?
Questrade, Wealthsimple, RBC Direct Investing and TD Direct Investing files import as holdings, so net worth includes registered accounts without a broker login.
Is it really free?
Yes. No subscription, no premium tier, no in-app purchases. OwnFi may earn a commission from clearly labelled partner offers you can switch off.
Where is my data stored?
Only on your phone, encrypted at rest. There is no OwnFi server; the App Store privacy label reads "Data Not Collected".
